FRENCH CHAT WITH DANIEL LAVOIE
29th January 2004

DL: Hello, I'm here, ask me whatever you like.
tk: Hello Daniel.
joelle: Hello Daniel.
a-guniaPOLOGNE: Hello (or good evening) Daniel, how are you?
DL: Yes, I'm fine.
Mr Psylow: Greetings to everyone.
Lise: Hello Daniel, dead on time!
DL: Always.
joelle: How are you?
DL: Very well thank you.
tk: Will there be a video of your St. Germain show, or perhaps a DVD?
DL: St. Germain is a long way off, but maybe.
a-guniaPOLOGNE; Are you going to visit Poland one day? We just can't wait …
DL: I'd really like to visit Poland.
Michy: Apart from Switzerland in June and Paris in October, are you going to sing elsewhere?
DL: Yes, in Montréal in November and I'm going to tour France afterwards.
Mimi: You state that your album is an adult one. Do you think that the younger generation who know you, thanks to the success of NDDP, will follow you?
DL: I want to say "adult" for a certain maturity because there are lots of young people who are able to understand what I am saying.
Christine: Would you come one day to Russia?
DL: Yes, definitely, I would come to Russia one day.
Anne-Marie: Hello Daniel, how is the promotion going? Not too tired?
DL: No, not too tired, not yet.
a-guniaPOLOGNE; Well, you're welcome here, speak to your friend Garou. He's well-known here.
DL: Yes, I saw Garou recently. I know that you are well-acquainted with him.
Michy: Are you going to release an album of the songs of Félix Leclerc?
DL: Yes, it's a question of possibly releasing an album of Félix's songs but I don't know when.
Mimi: Is it difficult for your family to have a husband, a father who is a star?
DL: Yes, it is sometimes very difficult to have a father who is a star.
a-guniaPOLOGNE; Where are you at the moment, in France or in Québec?
DL: I'm in Paris.
Cloé: Are you going to come to Belgium?
DL: I don't know yet where I will go but I'll try to go everywhere where you want to invite me.
Lise: How was the welcome in France?
DL: Rather good, even very good.
Anne-Marie: Above all … congratulations on this marvellous album … from very beautiful words so well accompanied by your magnificent music … and always your voice .. of which we never grow tired!!! Nothing can be faulted in the album which truly deserves to be recognised. I wish you lots of success … you deserve it so much…
DL: Thanks Anne-Marie.
tk: Do you read the messages which we write you on the site?
DL: I read all the messages even if I don't always have the time to reply to them.
Natalie: Do you allow a private question? Do you like to sing when you're on your own?. What's your own repertory?
DL: I sing all day when I'm on my own because that's how I work on my songs.
Michèle: Daniel, hello, rather hello again, how did you enjoy yesterday's broadcast?
DL: If you're talking about Ruquier, they were very kind to me.
She-devil: Good evening. How can one get hold of "Aigre-doux, how are you?" and "Tips"? Are there re-issues planned as for the other old albums?
DL: I don't believe there are re-issues of those ones.
Pampam: Are you happy with your official site?
DL: Yes, I find that Alma's making a magnificent job of it.
Michy: Have you seen the very complimentary article about the album in yesterday's Ouest-France? (newspaper)
DL: No, I've not seen it.
Lise: What was the last album which you bought?
DL: Goldfrap.
Pampam: How did the filming of the promotional video go?
DL: It was extraordinary.
Michèle: Not too upset by Raphael Mezrahi's questions?
DL: Amused, not upset.
Natalie: Your songs are filled with very vibrant images and feelings. Are you sensitive to touch and smell?
DL: To touch.
Mimi: Do you take a lot of trouble with your image? Do you give a lot of importance to it? (for example I'm thinking about your hair which is no longer grey, and what a pity!)
DL: My hair became black again for my part of the Airman and I haven't had time to think about it since then.
Michèle: Daniel, when will we finally see the promotional video which seems superb? But all the album is superb, thank you, we have waited … it was hard but it was worth it, the album is magnificent.
She-devil: About your new album, two songs sound a bit Spanish. Are you, like Sting, also exploring different styles?
DL: Yes and no, my son plays the flamenco guitar.
Melissa Coutinho: What kind of books do you like to read?
DL: I read science, philosophy, history and mysteries.
Tally: Hello. Recently you have worked in French mostly. Do you plan to work in English?
DL: For the moment, I have no plans to work in English.
Lise: From when will the promotional video be shown in France?
DL: A first excerpt will be shown this evening on Laurent Ruquier's programme. It won't be finished until next week.
tk: At home in Russia there are many admirers of your work and we have been created an unofficial site. Do you know about it, have you already looked at it?
DL: Yes, I know the Russian site and I've already looked at it.
Tally: You wrote a lot of songs for different artistes last year. Didn't you think to release these songs yourself?
DL: I don't really know, maybe.
Irina: As I know you can't stand tobacco smoke, how did you feel lighting a cigarette every evening during "Le Petit Prince"?
DL: I would light it at the end of the song.
Francoise: Good evening Daniel, and finally well done with the wonderful album. Are you able to confirm that you will be at the festival "Pully à l'heure du Québec on the 9th June?
DL: Yes, I should be there.
Natalie: There was a big gap between "Ici" and "Comedies Humaines". Does the new album reflect the differences between the Daniel Lavoie of 1995 and 2003? What are the differences?
DL: It’s up to you to discover them.
Lucy: Have you a favourite composer?
DL: I have many favourite composers from Bach to Miles Davis.
She-devil: Which song of your own is your favourite?
DL: At the moment it is "Les Paravents Chinois".
Melissa Coutinho: Would you be interested to work in Spanish?
DL: Claro que si (Yes, of course).
a-guniaPOLOGNE: Can we see the video on the site? It's a bit difficult for us Poles to buy your albums and to watch the promotional videos.
DL: There will be excerpts on the site www.universalmusic.fr
Michèle: So, "Les Paravents Chinois" looks like being the favourite one, it's true that it is wonderful.
Michèle: Daniel you know you're thought of highly for this promotion. Do you perhaps find this difficult?
DL: Not too difficult.
Telle: Good evening Daniel. Can we expect a "live" CD later? ("Olympia" and "Live au Divan Vert" were wonderful!)
DL: Possibly, why not?
Michy: Have you thought of singing some of your "old" songs during your tours?
DL: There will certainly be some old songs on the tour.
Melissa Coutinho: Why do you prefer that song?
DL: I don't know, I just like it.
Cloé: I find "Benies soient les femmes" wonderful.
joelle: Will you be playing the piano in October?
DL: At bit, but not all the time.
She-devil: In "Ici" there is a song "Avec les loups", in "Comedies Humaines" there is the song "Les loups". Are you fascinated by these animals (wolves) and if yes, why?
DL: I think that wolves are very beautiful beasts.
Christine: My question is a bit odd. Do you like to dream?
DL: Who doesn't like to dream?
Mimi: Are you at the keyboard or is someone else doing it for you?
DL: Anne-Sophie is doing it for me.
Tally: Are you going to record video clips for other songs on the new album?
DL: Probably.
Melissa Coutinho: Is there a way you can give concerts in Paris for more than a week?
DL: One week, maybe two.
a-guniaPOLOGNE: Do you read everything which is written about you in the papers, on the sites etc. Does it disturb you to be famous?
DL: No, I don't read everything.
Lise: Will the October concerts be acoustic or intimate, will there be lots of people on stage?
DL: It will be quite intimate.
Melissa Coutinho: Have you ever been to Mexico?
DL: I've been to Mexico many times.
She-devil: The song "Lisa" exists only on your "Live au Divan Vert". Do you expect to record it in a studio one day? I believe it is my favourite. There's a lot of feeling in it.
DL: Lisa will stay on "Divan Vert".
misshannibal: Do you expect the concert will be a "new dawn" in style, like the start of a new era?
DL: No, not really.
Michy: Have you had the time to do much gardening this year?
DL: Not a lot of time for gardening this year.
Michèle: Why have you chosen the Auditorium St. Germain?
DL: I wanted a small theatre, a warm theatre.
joelle: I think that's an excellent idea, but that reduces the amount of seating.
misshannibal: Have you lost your sweet dreamer soul in jetlag since success?
DL: I don't believe I have lost my sweet dreamer soul.
tk: Will there be promotional videos of other songs from the CD "Comedies Humaines"?
DL: One for the moment.
Mimi: You've got a sublime voice and for that alone one must buy this album. You have stated, a long time ago, that you would like to sing like Leonard Cohen. Is that really true?
DL: Yes, I am a big fan of Leonard Cohen.
Christine: Do you have a favourite painter?
DL: Bruegel.
Tory: Good evening Daniel, thanks for giving us such an opportunity to talk to you. I've got a bit of a strange question. Is there anything in your life you feel sorry about? Is there any advice to avoid mistakes? Thanks in advance.
DL: There are very few things I feel sorry about but I'd rather not talk about them.
Melissa Coutinho: How do you consider yourself? A quiet person or a very extroverted one?
DL: A bit of both.
misshannibal: How are you in the kitchen? Just an ordinary cook or a top chef?
DL: Top chef, obviously.
misshannibal: I recognise your modesty!
She-devil: If you weren't Daniel Lavoie, whom would you have liked to be?
DL: I've never thought about it.
Natalie: Your fans say a lot of beautiful things to you and show you how much they feel about you … Is there anything you would like to hear from them which you have never heard?
DL: It's already more than I deserve, truly I lack nothing.
joelle: When you're not gardening, what do you particularly like to do?
DL: Read.
tk: Have you a favourite film?
DL: "Lord of the Rings" - the full version.
Melissa Coutinho: Is it difficult for you to answer a lot of questions like you are doing now?
DL: A little.
joelle: What's it like to be Daniel Lavoie?
DL: Not very different from being Joelle.
Natasha: I want to thank you for agreeing to come here and talk with us.
Camy: I must thank you for being able to take part in the filming of the promotional video, it was an unforgettable experience (especially at my age), a pity I wasn't able to see you and well done for the album. I'm impatient to see the pictures!
DL: Thanks Camy and you will see you are wonderful.
tk: Are you yourself happy with "Book of Eve".
DL: Not really.
She-devil: Who is your favourite poet?
DL: Théophile Gautier.
Michy: You like to hide yourself don't you? In NDP, then in the horrible jumpers in "Book of Eve", now in the make up of "Comedies"! That said, the publicity photos for the album are the best. Stick with the photographer!
DL: Thanks Michy.
misshannibal: Do you always go incognito in Paris today like 10 years ago?
DL: Yes, I put on a disguise.
Tory: How long are you going to stay in Paris, Daniel?
DL: Another week.
emilie: Apart from Leonard Cohen, which singers do you like?
DL: Ferré, Bashung, Mauranne and lots and lots of others.
Mimi: How long are you able to stay away from your family?
DL: It’s never easy but I’ve done it over the years.
Keryann: Are you continuing to take courses in vocal technique to train your voice?
DL: No.
Melissa Coutinho: What’s the best memory you have of your time in NDP?
DL: The friendship.
Michy: It would be a good idea to set some poems to music, are you thinking about it?
DL: I do it just for myself.
Natalie: Did you read stories to your children when they were little?
DL: Yes, I read the “Lord of the Rings” to my son for two years.
Tk: Is it true that you received a certificate for the most beautiful way of saying “I LOVE YOU”? (as Frollo).
DL: Yes, it is.
Tally: Your new album will be released in Canada on the 10th February. Why did you release it in France first?
DL: It was produced in France.
Gitane-POLAND: I am in shock that I can talk with you, do you like such meetings with fans?
DL: It’s great fun.
Lise: Are you good at DIY? If yes, what do you do best?
DL: I do it, but not well.
She-devil: You like French song very much but what about international artistes?
DL: Yes, I greatly like international artistes but the list would be too long.
Melissa Coutinho: Did you ever take singing lessons? The way you sing is great.
DL: I learned the hard way, singing every day for years.
Joelle: How have you come to have such different voices between your albums and “Le Petit Prince” for example?
DL: The voice is an instrument which I work on.
Guest: Do you think that you will one day play again in “Notre Dame”?
DL: It’s a question of catching the moment but I don’t know if I would do it.
Michèle: It would seem that you are being pressed a bit to make a CD of Felix Leclerc’s songs.
DL: Yes, I am being pressed a bit.
Tory: And what’s your best memory of last year?
DL: My holiday in Cuba.
Melissa Coutinho: You seem very polite and nice on line .. but do you also enjoy giving autographs after the show, when you are tired?
DL: Sometimes it’s a little tiring.
a-guniaPOLOGNE: Do you prefer to meet fans face to face or indirectly like this?
DL: It depends on the fans.
Tally: What is your favourite question in the interviews? Do you have one? If you don’t then what question do you want to hear?
DL: No favourite questions.
She-devil: Can we expect an English album in the near years? I like you a lot in English.
DL: No, I don’t work any more in English.
Mr Psylow: At what age did you write your first album?
DL: At 25.
Emilie: What is the favourite theme of your songs?
DL: Life.
Tally: Glasses really suit you.
DL: Thanks.
Melissa Coutinho: Which character do you prefer, the Airman or Frollo?
DL: Frollo, he was such a loveable old bastard.
Melissa Coutinho: How do you feel about “Ils s’aiment” being such a well-known song?
DL: I’m quite proud.
Mimi: When you compose a song for an artiste does it ever happen that you no longer recognise it on their album?
DL: It happens.
Keryann: When you come to Paris do you see Julie Zenatti and Patrick Fiori again and what do you think about how their careers are going?
DL: Julie is in my video but not Patrick because there are only women in it.
Mimi: Will “Comedies Humaines” be your last album? Do you still see yourself as a singer in five years time?
DL: I want to die on stage at 104.
Michèle: In any case, congratulations on the latest compositions for Florent, Nolwen and, above all, for Lara.
Melissa Coutinho: Do you have other artistic tendancies? Do you paint or draw or something like that?
DL: I paint and draw badly.
Michy: Are you giving up your “English” roots completely to follow “French” paths?
DL: I’m not giving up English, I just don’t have the energy for both.
Tory: Apart from events that might be great for you, were there any new people that amazed you, that interested you?
DL: Many, many, many.

DL: Never.
Natalie: Do your children like to hear you singing? Perhaps they sing together with you?
DL: My son listens to punk - he tolerates me.
Keryann: Do you prefer to sing in a musical or to sing on your own?
DL: I like both.
Melissa Coutinho: Is it easy being Canadian and working in France? I mean it’s the same language but people in different countries can be very different sometimes.
DL: Change is always fun.
Melissa Coutinho: What’s your favourite animal?
DL: The crow.
Mr.Psylow: How long does it take you to record an album?
DL: About three months.

Tessatess: What do you think of the Spanish version of Ana Belen’s “Ils s’aiment”?
DL: I love Ana Belen’s version.

Michy: Would you be able to sing “Anna” during the tours? It’s a marvellous song.
DL: I don’t know, I’ve not thought about it.
Guest: How many languages do you speak? Do you know how to say something in Polish for example?
DL: English, French and a bit of Spanish.
Tory: Daniel, maybe you have also got some questions for your fans?

DL: Yes, but it’s a secret.
Mr saroyan: Do you have your own musicians?
DL: I change my musicians for each tour.
Melissa Coutinho: Is it strange to you that most of your fans are female?
DL: I don’t think most of the fans are female, they just communicate more.
a-guniaPOLOGNE: What about the Foundations you support? I mean, do you think that, thanks to you, their impact on the people of Québec is stronger?
DL: I don’t know. I just like to give back a little of what I receive.

DL: Of course.
Melissa Coutinho: Do you think it will be easy to find tickets for your concerts if we try to buy them shortly before October?
DL: Maybe, maybe not.
